Inclusion

St John's has for many years provided extensive help to children with additional needs. We pride ourselves on our work with all children and our aptitude for obtaining specific help for those children whose needs require extra support. In March 2026, we received positive feedback from Ofsted during their inspection at our current location. The Ofsted inspector noted:

"Supporting vulnerable children and promoting inclusion are real strengths of the setting. Staff go above and beyond to ensure all children can participate fully. They know their children well, quickly identify any barriers to learning, and adapt the environment, routines, and learning activities to meet individual needs. Strategies such as Makaton signs, visual prompts, and small-group work enhance children's communication and confidence. Additionally, staff collaborate closely with parents and other professionals to ensure children receive the support they need to make steady progress."

We seek advice and support through the County Special Needs Teams as well as carrying out research to ensure we can provide the best possible support for your child. We have significant experience within the team and we call on external experts as needed. Our SEN co-ordinator supports staff and children with their needs and tailor makes educational plans to support their individual learning and development. We also seek financial support through Local High Needs Funding panels run the DSPL 6 (Delivering Special Provision Locally).

The playgroup works to the requirements of the Education Act 2011; Special Educational Needs and Disability Code of Practice 2015 and Equality Act 2010. The role of Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator is Sophie Smith who work closely together with the parents, the child's keyworker and relevant multi agency teams to ensure that the most appropriate help is provided.
